Medicine, Community, Activism, and Service: The Story of Dr. Basheer Ahmed, A Muslim Immigrant in America
Join us for an interview regarding the wide-ranging life of distinguished psychiatrist, author, community activist, and philanthropist, Dr. Basheer Ahmed.
Raised in India, Dr. Ahmed eventually became the Director of Psychiatry at multiple US hospitals, the chairman of the Tarrant County Chapter of the Texas Society of Psychiatric Physicians, and a distinguished life fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. In addition to helping to found one of the first mosques in North Texas, he also founded the Muslim Community Center for Human Services, which provides free medical, dental, and mental health services to impoverished residents of the Dallas-Fort Worth area, irrespective of race, religion, and country of origin. For his work, he has been invited to the White House and received awards from the Multicultural Alliance, Dallas Independent School District, and Greater Dallas Asian American Chamber of Commerce. Earlier this year, Dr. Ahmed and his wife generously endowed a distinguished professorship to support science and multicultural education. A brief reception will follow afterwards.
