The New Funny Pages

Monday Feb 17 | 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

This talk explores the role of late 20th-century syndicated comic strips in BIPOC and gendered representation through visual experimentation. Using digital humanities and computer vision, I analyze 17,897 strips from Charles Schulz’s Peanuts and compare works by diverse cartoonists like Morrie Turner, Robb Armstrong, Lynn Johnston, and Jan Eliot.

The talk highlights how comics, especially by BIPOC and women cartoonists, resist full computational analysis, offering valuable insights for both comics studies and digital humanities.
