Texas Christian University presents the 2022 Diversity Day Conference: Revolutionizing Social Change in the Academy. The conference theme will discuss the need for systemic change within true educational reform.

Conference sessions will include:

Session Title: Revolutionizing Social Change in the Academy

Session Keynote Speaker: Michelle Alexander

Session Time: 11:00 am-12:00 pm

Session Description: The 2022 Diversity Day Conference theme, Revolutionizing Social Change in the Academy, will discuss the need for systemic change within true educational reform. While the world of higher education is ever-evolving, one thing remains, change is constant. Michelle Alexander, author of The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness, will provide insight into transformational racial justice in the academy. For the liberation of transformative beings, we change the practice of knowledge through learning and unlearning.

Session Title: Leading Across Divergence: Engaging Colleagues with Systemic Change

Session Keynote Speaker: Dr. Maria Hinojosa

Session Time: 1:00 pm-2:00 pm

Session Description: A constant state of change is an essential component of growth for colleges and universities. The process of bringing about organizational change is complex and requires patience and dedication. As we grow through change, our opportunities and obligations require us to engage with one another and hold each other accountable as we strive toward racial justice and social equality.

Session Title: Levers of Justice: Racial Equity Work is a Lifelong Commitment

Session Keynote Speaker: Dr. Liza Talusan

Session Time: 2:00 pm-3:00 pm

Session Description: Structural systems that have been continuously kept as gatekeepers are interwoven into our practices and policies in higher education. Thus, we need to value the perspectives and stories of those not in the dominant culture while decentering Whiteness. As higher education professionals, we must be committed to educational reform at the institutions we serve and globally. This involves shifting power, changing policies, and taking action to transform values and cultures.

Session Title: Struggle Gon’ Last Always: Understanding the Fight for Justice as Long Work

Session Keynote Speaker: Dr. David Stovall

Session Time: 3:00 pm-4:00 pm

Session Description: Throughout the world, the Black Freedom Movement has had a tremendous impact, particularly now, when the federal government is withdrawing from accountability and imposing threats towards historical frameworks. Accordingly, it is up to colleges and universities to step up as education has long been at the forefront of the fight for our humanity. As part of this session, Dr. David Stovall will provide insight into the work that must be done to speak the truth within the educational systems. We pose the following question: When does historical accuracy become a threat?
