About English Department

Submit to Eleven40Seven
Since 1873, the English Department has remained at the heart of academics at TCU. As one of the largest departments on campus, we are proud to work with students at every level in their education, from first-year writing and literature courses to doctoral studies in English or Rhetoric and Composition. Today, the English Department approaches both venerable and popular subjects – from Jane Austin, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Kenneth Burke or missionary writers, radical journalists, and comic books – with traditional and cutting edge tools. We work in both dusty and digital archives to advance knowledge about the centrality of culture in our lives. Our faculty have garnered significant scholarly recognitions in a broad range of intellectual areas, with special focus on British, American, and postcolonial literatures, rhetoric and composition, and creative writing. The department offers two majors in English and Writing, a minor in these areas, as well as Creative Writing, and the Ph.D. in English or Rhetoric and Composition.

Calling all Pre-Health students to learn more about Medical Anthropology and Medical Sociology can add value to your undergraduate degree. A new medical certificate is now going to be offered by the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. Some of these things we will discuss are course work involved, the approach to medicine from an anthropological and sociological lens, and the human aspects of illness.

This certificate may be most valuable to those who:

– Wish to serve in or come from disadvantaged communities

– Are interested in the human aspects of illness (environment, socioeconomic status, identity, gender, culture, etc.)

– Wish to know more about the mind-body connection in health

– Wish to know about the effects of religion/spirituality on health

– Wish to know about how society influences ideas of health

About Anthropological Society

Info Session: New Medical Certificate
The Anthropology Department at TCU studies the four branches of anthropology: 1. Social anthropology may be of interest to those studying administration, human resources, and public health as well as other related fields. 2. Linguistic is of interest if you wish to learn more about culture, language, and creative writing among other things. 3. Biological anthropology encompasses medical, forensics, osteology, and anatomy. 4. Archaeology is the study of humans of the past, history, and the changes of human behavior over time among other things. If you wish to bring the human aspects of your field into your career, then the Anthropological Society invites you to join us as we strive to take what we learn from Anthropology courses and put the into practice. For example, biology can study how cancer behaves and how to treat it. Anthropology in medicine is concerned with that as well as the human aspects of illness. Questions in this case would include: Can the person seeking treatment afford medical care? Does this person live in a location where medical care is accessible? How does someone's culture play in role in their seeking medical attention, and what restrictions might they have compared to others? Does this person work long hours which would prevent them from taking medication on time and with a meal? If you find yourself asking questions about human circumstances then the Anthropological Society then please consider comparing to our biweekly meetings.
